This visualization of Earth—made by anthropologist Félix Pharand—shows urban areas, shipping routes, global roads and air networks. It gives a very good idea on how big our species' physical impact on the planet really is.

So big, in fact, that scientists are thinking about starting a new geological era: The Anthropocene. Read more and see the "big" picture at gizmodo.com, click here.
Carpe Diem... Sieze the, uh... Carp?

Posted By Bryce Parks on June 29, 2011

Click the title for a larger version of the video. The video is from Spoon River, Illinois. The explanation is from Wikipedia" “Silver carp have become notorious for being easily frightened by boats and personal watercraft, which causes them to leap high into the air. The fish can jump up to 8–10 feet (2.5–3 m) into the air, and numerous boaters have been injured by collisions with the fish.[3] According to the EPA, “reported injuries include cuts from fins, black eyes, broken bones, back injuries, and concussions.”.[4] Silver carp can grow to 100 pounds (45 kg) in mass.[5] This behavior has sometimes also been attributed to the very similar bighead carp, but this is uncommon. Bighead carp do not normally jump when frightened.[1]”

Click here to jump over and browse the hundreds of Veterans already being honored, like that handsome guy we chose as our featured photo (completely random, we swear!). Thanks to Tom, Perry, Johnny and all our friends at Radio Dubuque for undertaking this effort in honor of Tri-State Veterans.
