21st Annual Catfish Festival
May 25-27, A.Y. McDonald Park
If Catfish Festival were human, she’d be turning 21 this year.  That seems like a pretty good reason to celebrate.  And in fact, Catfish Festival will be celebrating – not just “all things catfish” as it does every year or even the fact that the festival is starting it’s third decade, but the fact that last year’s change in dates proved successful. Historic Millwork District Master Plan Development

MILLWORK DISTRICT SERIES: PART 2
by Mike Ironside
After Warehouse District Revitalization became a top 10 community priority as identified in Envision 2010 announced in January of 2006, the City of Dubuque, property owners, and other stakeholders like Dubuque Main Street and Gronen Restoration began holding regular meetings toward developing a strategy for district redevelopment. At the same time, the Dubuque City Council set sustainability and the arts as some of the City’s top priorities – a challenge for any development plan, but ultimately in synch with a major redevelopment that would reuse existing structures in an urban neighborhood that had already witnessed the arts re-imagining uses for warehouse spaces.

A cure for Bachmann?
Don't we wish. : ) Charlie Giese, makes a humorous offer of Excedrin "the headache medicine" to Congresswoman and Republican presidential hopeful, Michelle Bachmann (far left... er, uh, well, far left of this photo anyway), from Minnesota, in Dubuque yesterday. The candidate has been in the news lately amid questions of the medical treatment of her migraine headaches, thus the joke. As for most candidates, Iowa is sure to become a second home to her in the coming months, and Dubuque a frequent stop, in the race to win the first Caucus in the country. Photo by Jeff Stiles. Otto's Place Café and Lounge
So Otto Sallman’s Restaurant has come full circle.  You probably don’t know who Otto was.  In 1899 he built a building on Bouthillier Street in Galena next to the railroad tracks right across the street from the Train Depot.  We know he intended to open a restaurant because the October 20, 1899 Galena Daily Gazette contained an article titled “Otto Sallman Restaurant Handsomely Equipped”.  Otto ran out of money, however, and never got to fulfill his dream.  In subsequent years his building served as a handmade basket store, home bakery, grocery store, pizza parlor, furniture store, antique shop and more recently a sandwich café. (by Rich Belmont) Continue reading »

A Towering Addition to a Challenging Course
“Have Fun Storming the Castle!” Miracle Max’s line from “The Princess Bride” was the first thing that popped into my head when I first saw this photo come across my e-mail. When I first discussed the addition of the climbing tower to the Four Mounds Challenge Ropes Course as part of the 20th year of operation of the great team building venue, I clearly wasn’t thinking nearly big enough. The three sided, forty foot high rock climbing tower, located right next to the high ropes course, is definitely the new highlight element of the already venerable course. Photo of the Day: FISHFLIES!
Call them what you want Mayfly lovers, but this is Dubuque and we call them fishflies, and last night they were out in force. Photographer Steven Schleuning captured a couple iconic photos of an unfortunate gas station that forgot to turn off their lights. Click the title for the other photo in the gallery which is even better, but it's tall so it didn't work as well for photo of the day. And 365 friend, Jon Bruce, took a little video. All That Jazz Photo Gallery
We're doubled the size of the gallery from last Friday's All That Jazz featuring Chicago funk and R&B band, The Business.  It was a beautiful night for a festival at the Town Clock and The Business did not disappoint, bringing their infectious mix of highly danceable tunes.  The venue proved a perfect setting for a few costumed party people from the Diamond Jo Casino's new nightclub experience Boogie Nights to interact with festival-goers and get people wondering, "just what is this Boogie Nights thing all about?"  Stay tuned, my friends.  For more pics of July's All That Jazz, click here to see our Facebook photo archiveContinue reading »
Comedian & Movie Star David Koechner
You know him from such movies as Anchorman, Waiting..., and Talladega Nights and if you were at the Mississippi Moon Bar on Wednesday, July 20th, you now know him from there too. Playing off many of his famous movie lines early on, he eventually used his life and his family as the basis for a lot of his jokes. Click here for many more photos from the live comedy event at the Mississippi Moon Bar last night including meet and greet photos after the show, although we can't promise that they're feature girls as lovely as these. : ) Continue reading »
