After Warehouse District Revitalization became a top 10 community priority as identified in Envision 2010 announced in January of 2006, the City of Dubuque, property owners, and other stakeholders like Dubuque Main Street and Gronen Restoration began holding regular meetings toward developing a strategy for district redevelopment. At the same time, the Dubuque City Council set sustainability and the arts as some of the City’s top priorities – a challenge for any development plan, but ultimately in synch with a major redevelopment that would reuse existing structures in an urban neighborhood that had already witnessed the arts re-imagining uses for warehouse spaces.

The ugly aftermath
The BMW in this photo by Steven Schluening, turned out to contain much more tragedy than just destruction as a life was lost in the accident. The ugly aftermath was lot worse that we imagined.  14" of rain = 243.32 MILLION gallons of water per sq. mile.... behold the power of water. We collected hundreds of photos of the damage including some stunning photos from East Dubuque and Galana, but they are all from friends and 365 fans Facebook pages. Some have different privacy setting on their Facebook accounts, so we figured the best way to share them was by posting their links all to our Facebook profile and anything you are eligible to see will show up there (a great reason to finally join Facebook) Click here for the carnage. Tacos Rancheros at Adobo Mexican Grill

Just open a week now, the very authentic, traditional Tacos Rancheros at the new Adobo's Mexican Grill at 756 Main Street (near the Town Clock) have proven an instant hit and you know they're doing something right when Mexicans living locally are ordering them in bulk and calling ahead to check on availability of some of the less-Americanized flavors like Tacos de Lengua or Tacos de Cabeza (yeah, it's what you think). But for the rest of us, the $1.75 Al Pastor, Carne Asada, Carnitas and homemade Chorizo Tacos Rancheros served on a soft, open-face corn tortilla will have crying "más, por favor!" All the sauces and spice mixes are prepared in-house and fresh made tortilla chips, served hot are heavenly.

Rock-n-Roll Rewind
A Benefit for Albrecht Acres, August 5-6 Mississippi Moon Bar   by Mike Ironside
If you enjoyed live music in the Dubuque area back in those magic years of the 1960s and ‘70s and for some reason were not able to make it to last year’s Rock n Roll Rewind, there’s a pretty good chance that someone who did attend explained to you with great enthusiasm that you missed something very special. Because you did. Rock n Roll Rewind 2010, the first “official” Rewind was a music festival, reunion, and party that surprised most everyone in attendance, including no doubt, the organizers. Hosted by the Dubuque Rock Veterans (DRV) at Courtside Sports Bar over two days last August, Rock n Roll Rewind showcased reunion performances by 17 bands from the ‘60s and ‘70s. Not only were people surprised by the number of people in attendance or how smoothly the event played out, but also by how good the singers and musicians still sounded and how much fun it was to hear those bands play again. (Click into this blog post for the full performance schedule). Continue reading »
